EVERY LIFE MATTERS - A DEVOTIONAL BY RICK WARREN

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV)

All life is sacred. It is the mentality of “some lives matter more than others” that caused the Holocaust. That was the mentality of Hitler: “Some people are more important than others. So we’ll just wipe out the weak, the infirm, the aged, or people we disagree with.” Today we even see it in young couples that are expecting and hear, “We hate to tell you this, but your baby may have a birth defect.” And the couple starts considering abortion.

If everybody who had a defect were aborted, you would have been aborted. You have defects. Everybody is handicapped. You just don’t admit it. You have some emotional handicaps, and you have some fears you won’t even talk to your wife about. They scare you to death. You also have emotional handicaps, such as the idea that you’re not as smart as everybody else. And you have some physical handicaps. Have you learned that not everything in your body works? That’s why you’re not in the Olympics. We all have defects. We all have problems.

Who makes the decision that your defect isn’t big enough to get rid of? Do you know a family who has a special needs child — an autistic, mentally undeveloped, or physically handicapped child? Do they love that child less? No. They love that child more! The Bible says that God loves the weak, the infirm, the special needs person. We need them in our lives to learn unselfishness.

We must always protect the sanctity of life. Why? Because it reveals God’s purpose and shows God’s glory.

You are valuable, no matter who or what you are. So is every child.

The Bible tells us that God accepts responsibility for all our genetic defects. Did you know that? Not the problems in our lives we brought on ourselves because of overeating or smoking or drinking too much, but all the genetic weaknesses that you didn’t have any say in are all part of your SHAPE.

The Bible says in 1 Samuel 16:7, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (NIV).

God accepts responsibility, because he has a bigger perspective than any human. He can see what you can’t see. And he loves each person he made for their potential to do the great things he has planned for us.

God isn’t going to compare you with anybody else. But he is going to compare you with your potential. It’s not my goal to be the best pastor in the world. I’m not even trying. It’s my goal to be the best pastor I can possibly be given the talent, background, opportunities, and gifts that God gave me. That’s what I’ll be evaluated on.

IF YOU HUMBLE YOURSELF, GOD WILL FORGIVE YOU

“...the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.” – John 6:37

During ancient times, High Priests were the most respected people in the society. They lived with all honour and dignity. One such High Priest was Eli. He was a righteous person who judged Israelites. He was chosen by God out of all tribes of Israel to be His priest and the one who is worthy to stand upon the altar. All the people of Israel know that Eli was a holy person. But Eli did a mistake in his life. He never corrected his sons-Hophni and Phinehas who were behaving wickedly. They took the prime cuts of meat from sacrifices and also committed adultery with woman who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. Though Eli was aware of their behaviour, he rebuked them too lightly and was unable to stop them. As his sons continued sinning, God’s word came against Eli through a prophet saying, “...There shall not be an old man in thine house” (I Samuel 2:31) i.e., all male descendants will die before reaching old age. 

Later, Kings started ruling the country. They had all power and authority over the entire region. One such King was Ahab-the husband of Jezebel. He was a wicked person who ruled Israelites. He was the seventh king of Israel since Jeroboam. He was a notorious person and an evil ruler who hungered for power. His wife Jezebel was also evil in such a way that she wanted to kill every true prophet in Israel. They had no righteousness in their life and he kept on doing mistakes. When the innocent blood of Naboth-the owner of vineyard was shed, God’s word came against him through Prophet Elijah saying, “...In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine”. (I Kings 21:19) God warned them through Elijah that both he and his wife will be killed. 

Now, if we look into the life of these two different people Eli and Ahab, both of them had committed mistake and God’s word came against them. But they differed in the way in which they responded to it. Eli said, “...It is the Lord: let Him do what seemeth good. (I Samuel 3:18) But Ahab responded differently. “...He humbled himself and tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and fasted” (I Kings 21:27)

 

Eli was a saint who kept on hearing God’s word and always accepted it just the way He said. That is why, even now he accepted what the Lord had said and never bothered it. So, God’s wrath came to pass exactly as He had spoken. Though Ahab was a wicked person from the beginning, he never grumbled or complained on hearing God’s word. Instead he immediately humbled himself in the sight of God. Because he humbled, God said “...I will not bring this evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house”. (I Kings 21:29) Because of his humbleness, God’s wrath did not come to pass at that time.

Even today, you might be the most respected person in your locality but you might have lost your dignity because of your deeds. On the other hand, you might be an adulterer or someone who has stolen or probably you might have even murdered. You might have been accused and rejected by the world. You might have lost all your hope today. Whatever is your state, the Lord is gracious to forgive everything and He is willing to accept you just the way you are. 

Bible says in Isaiah 55:7, “...He(Lord) will have mercy upon him...for He will abundantly pardon”

Whatever mistakes you might have done till now, know the truth that the Lord is for you and not against you. His Gracious Hands are there to comfort you and not to punish you. He is waiting for you with an outstretched arm to accept you into His family. He will never reject you at any cost. He will never forsake you at any point of your life. Just commit your life to Him. Only He has the power to change your life upside down.

If you humble yourself today, He will be gracious to forgive and lift you up in front of all.

IF YOU WOULD BELIEVE YOU WOULD SEE THE GLORY OF GOD

“...If you would believe you would see the glory of God.” – John 11:40

In Luke 8:41-56, we read about a person named Jairus. He was a ruler of the synagogue. As his only daughter was dying he came to Jesus and fell down at His feet and begged Him to come to his house. 

Jesus accepted his request and went with him. He came with a belief that Jesus Christ can heal her daughter who was just 12 years old and was dying. As he was going along with Jesus, someone from his house came to him and told that his daughter died. Also they told him not to trouble Jesus anymore. 

How Jairus might have felt at that moment? He came to Jesus Christ with a great belief in his heart that He will heal his daughter. But situations became worse and his only daughter died.

As he heard the news of his daughter death he hears the words of two people who were with him. One belongs to his servant. The servant of his own house thought that Jesus Christ can’t turn the situation around and so he told not to trouble Jesus. Another voice belongs to Jesus Christ who told Jairus to stay on his faith and belief. 

Jairus was confronted with two different choices. Either he can stay in his belief or he can leave his belief that he had upon Jesus Christ. How Jairus reacted in that situation? He had chosen to stay in his belief and with Jesus Christ. Because of his faith upon Jesus Christ, his daughter was healed and death could not hold her as Jesus Christ commanded her to arise from death and she indeed arose. 

Even today you might be in a state of despair and dejection. You might be facing several choices in your life. But if you choose to stay in your belief that you have upon Jesus Christ your sorrow will be turned to joy.

In the previous year, once my marriage was fixed I begun to speak with my fiancée through phone. We had nearly a month gap between our engagement and wedding. I know that I am getting married according to God’s will but after some days of our engagement, situations got changed and my fiancée begun to feel sad for certain things. I still remember a day when she cried badly and I really don’t know what to do. I thought my marriage will not happen.

God has already promised me that my marriage life will be filled with peace and joy. On the other side my fiancée told me with tears that she is not ready for marriage life. I could not face that situation and I thought that my marriage won’t happen. One particular evening I went to a prayer centre and cried a lot to God. I was crying very badly for I don’t know what to do.

As I was crying Jesus Christ spoke to me and He asked me one simple question, “Whose words do you believe?” Then I realised that I was crying because I had started to believe the words of my fiancée rather than the words of God.

On that evening Holy Spirit helped me to say to God that I will believe in His words alone whatever might be the situation. Then God’s divine peace and joy filled my heart. After that day I never had any sorrow in my heart regarding my marriage. I had put my belief upon Jesus Christ and He poured out His presence on the day of my marriage and His presence is leading us even after one year. Now I live a joyful and peace filled family life. God's glory is leading us and protecting us.

My dear young friends, whatever be your life’s situation, put your faith and belief upon Jesus Christ. He is an all powerful God. He will change your life situation. He will calm all that roars against you and trouble you. Your sorrows will turn to joy. 

You might be expecting a child or a job or a blessing in your studies or a promotion or a healing. Whatever might be your expectations, it will be fulfilled by the gracious hands of Jesus Christ. Just put your trust on God. You will see Him doing miracle in your life in the coming day. Your life will be filled with God’s peace and joy. You shall not perish. You will live. God bless you.
